Old Business

- As approved at the last meeting, John Louden reported that he purchased additional chairs for the clubhouse.

- Warbird Fly In - This event is still slated for June 29th. Any type of plane will be permitted to fly during the event, provided it's decorated with some type of military markings. Rege reminded everyone that we will need volunteers to man the event. If you're interested in helping out during the event, please contact Rege or any club officer.

- Rege announced that he checked with the town of Danville about getting running water for the flying site. He reported that the initial connection would cost $800 and then there would be a monthly cost of about $35. It was decided that we would not connect to the city's water supply.

- The Hendrick's County Fair still wants us to set up a display. Rege reported that there is not enough room for a flying demonstration for this event, but we still plan to set up a static display booth. The event is scheduled for July 20th.

New Business

- The club's Spring Fun Fly will be held on May 17th. More details during next month's meeting.

- Rege reported that there will be a Red Bull Air Race in Detroit, MI on May 31st and June 1st.

- The club will conduct it's first Adopt-A-Highway cleanup of the year on Saturday, May 19th. We plan to meet at the flying site at 8:30 to get organized and start the clean up at 9:00. All members are encouraged to participate. We need at least 18 members to help with the actual trash pickup, but with more, the job gets done sooner. We also need members with vans to help transport participants along the cleanup route and to bring bottled water to the highway for the participants.

- Rege Hall reported that Advantage Hobby has offered our club a discount of on purchases if we send them a roster list and e-mail addresses. In return, members will receive a 3% discount on purchases. On an annual basis, they will mail the club a check in the amount of 1% of all the purchases made by our members. Advantage Hobby indicates they will not sell the e-mail addresses but will use them only to send additional discount coupons to our members. Members may unsubscribe from the mailing list at any time. The club voted to send Advantage Hobby the roster and participate in this program.

- Rege announced that he added a rod to the frequency board for members using 2.4 GHz radios. Please make sure to put a pin with your name on it on the rod whenever you are flying with a 2.4 GHz radio.

- The field parking area will be extended to the west when the ground firms up. Waste Management will supply the gravel and labor.

- It was reported that we should reserve the Twin Bridges Lodge for our December 2008 meeting as soon as possible. Apparently dates are stating to fill up.

- There was a suggestion that we might want to look into applying for a TAG grant from AMA. TAG is a youth program sponsored by AMA. John Louden reported that other TAG events have been quite large and that he thought we didn't have enough room for such an event. In lieu of applying for a TAG event, we discussed hosting some smaller event for some youth organizations from the area...such as Boy or Girl Scouts, church youth groups, etc. More details to follow.

Show and Tell

- Wayne Jones brought his new Thunder Mustang. It's a small electric powered model of a ¾ Mustang. It weighs 20 ounces, has a 40 inch wingspan and is covered in blue, white and yellow.

- Rege Hall showed us his 89 inch Extra. It's powered by a 3MM-53 gas engine. Really nice looking plane. Rege is controlling it with a 2.4 GHz radio system.

Presentation

Joe Hartsock gave a presentation about 2.4 GHz radio systems. Joe said that an article he read indicated that anything conductive in the area of the receivers could block the transmitted signal. Any wires, carbon fiber material, metal pushrods, etc., in the line of sight between the transmitter and receiver could block the radio signal. Also, if using 2.4 GHz radios in planes with carbon fiber fuselages, be sure to perform a very thorough radio check before flying the plane. The article suggested that a good clean radio installation, with wires neatly run from receivers to servos/batteries, should avoid any problems with signal blockage.

With no more club business, the meeting was adjourned.

The May club meeting will be held at the club flying site club house on Wednesday, May 7th. With the May meeting, per the Club By-Laws, we move to summer meeting times. The May meeting will start at 7:30 p.m.

One last reminder, please support your local hobby shops. Thank you, HobbyTown in Castleton and Dawg House Hobbies in Brownsburg, for extending a discount to our club for our monthly raffle prizes.

Meeting notes form the December 2007 meeting:

We had approximately 40 members at the meeting

As a club we should be very proud of the generosity of all our members. Lots of toys for the Methodist Childrens Home and food for the Shared Blessings Food Pantry. It is really special to help out those less fortunate than ourselves.

Randy Schwersenska from the Johnson County RC Flyers at Camp Atterbury. He gave a presentation on Senior Pattern Association (SPA). The JCRCF is going to hold a sanctioned SPA event in August 2008. Check out a link to SPA website on our links page. Senior is for the airplanes, not the pilots.

We voted to have the January meeting at the during the January 1st Fly In.

We also voted to have the remaining indoor meetings at the field

Tim Landon presented the idea to host an IMAC event for introduction to IMAC and asked for a vote for him and several other club members to host an IMAC school at our field on Saturday March 29, 2008. He will be in charge of the event. He has invited some IMAC guys to put on a class on what IMAC is and how to fly. Everyone is welcome, and the club voted ok, with the condition that the field not be closed for the event. It has been determined that there should be plenty of air space for members to fly if they wish and IMAC demos.

The January 1st Fly In and Soup Lunch is scheduled for Tuesday January 1st.

We then had a great sub sandwhich and pitch in supper.

We ended the meeting with the annual December drawings, every member in attendance took home a nice prize.

AMA / Boy Scouts Trainer Day at Muncie - Saturday, October 13 - Tom Carlyle

I left for Muncie around 6:00 a.m. Saturday. When I left Brownsburg, it was about 30 degrees, with little to no wind. When I arrived in Muncie around 7:45, it was still cold and the winds were light. By the time we were taken to the flight line, it hadn't warmed much and the winds were starting to increase. By 9:00 a.m. the winds had grown quite strong...20 mph with higher gusts. It was great kite flying weather! But, I knew it wasn't going to be very good model airplane flying weather.

AMA intended for us to fly some little 3-channel electrics, but they would have blown away in all that wind. We ended up flying glow engine powered LT-40s, and even they were a real hand full. Take off required a helper to hold the airplane on the runway while the pilot ran the engine up to full throttle. Then the helper would let go and the pilot would do his best to keep the plane from turning over on the run way before a 5-10 foot runout could be accomplished to get the plane in the air. Sometimes that worked...sometimes we went out on the runway and retreived a plane that had been overturned by the wind. Landings were another matter. I've never made, or seen, so many bad landings in my life, at least not on one day. We all had to literally fly the planes onto the ground by using down elevator. Then they bounced, and bounced, and ... well you get the picture. The winds were so strong that the planes just wouldn't stop flying. Once they were on the ground, the wind usually blew them over or pushed them so much you couldn't taxi them. By the end of the day, the 10 inch props we started with were all down to 9 about inches. Every plane, at some time during the day, had the prop strike the blacktop runway at full throttle during take off which would grind off part of the prop tip. It was absolutely the worst flying conditions I've every attempted to fly in, and hopefully I'll never have to fly in those type of conditions again.

I teamed up with District VI AVP Frank Roales from Vincennes. He's quite an interesting fellow and quite likable. We started flying at 9:00 a.m. and didn't get to take a break until 11:30. Both of us were chilled to the bone and our fingers were so stiff that we couldn't have flown for much longer. We let someone else take over for us while we grabbed some lunch and something warm to drink and tried to warm up. The rest room was about the only warm place we could find. Of course, we didn't want to hang out in the rest room, but the respit from the wind and cold sure made it tempting. Just about the time we got back to the flight line, around noon, AMA shut the flight line down for a group a guys from Henry County who flew some giant scale warbirds. They flew a Hellcat, a Zero, and a Skyraider. They also brought out a Corsair during the morning, but it apparently had something wrong with it. The pilot took it up some time between 8:00 and 9:00 for a test flight, made one lap, landed it, and put it away. Following the Giant Scale guys, Dennis Crooks flew his turbine powered Eurofighter. I can't get over how those turbines sound. What a rush! I found this photo on the Internet of Dennis with his jet.

Before the event started, I bumped into Scott Black from the Plainfield Screaming Eagles. I don't know where he ended up working that day, but I didn't see him again. He may have been working in the flight simulator tent working out of the wind. During the giant scale/jet demonstration, I bumped into two guys from Indy RC South but I don't recall their names. I've met both of them before; I think they were both at the City Wide we hosted a couple of years ago.

We started back up at about 12:30. Frank and I flew until about 2:30 and then both of said we'd had enough flying. Our hands were cold, our brains were drained, and neither of us wanted to trust our attention spans for much longer. Frank had crashed one of the trainers earlier in the afternoon and I think it affected his confidence. With others replacing us as the flight line, Frank and I helped service planes (refuel, check/change batteries, wipe down), handled the crowd of boys (and girls) waiting in line, and attempted to keep pedestrians out of the the flight area. The latter item was quite the challenge. AMA should have marked off the area better to keep people out of the flight area. I really think some people would have walked directly across the middle of the runways if we hadn't gotten their attention and steered them around. They still walked across the field at both ends of the runways, barely staying off the blacktop.

At about 2:45, a full scale Black Hawk helicopter landed on the field behind the flight line. We had to shut down flying while the Black Hawk came in. By 3:00, we were back at it again. The day was supposed to end at 4:00, but there were still about 50 boys in line, so we kept going. Finally, AMA shut it down at about 4:40 because the Black Hawk needed to leave. I stuck around to assist with cleanup and packing. I Finally got on the road home shortly after 5:00 and arrived at home a little before 7:00.

I would guess I had the sticks for over 2-1/2 hours that day, and in all, spent about 4-1/2 hours concentrating on a flying airplane. By the end of the day, my brain was spent, my body was tired, stiff, and aching from looking up, and my legs and feet were sore from standing and walking around all day. Oh, and I was cold! I don't think I warmed up until about 9:00 that evening. But, it was a great deal of fun and I'm glad I volunteered. I will probably volunteer to do it again next year if they have the same type of event. I hope the weather is better next year.

On that note, our next hiway cleanup day is Saturday October 29th. Meet at the field at 9:30 am and start clean-up by 10:00. The more people we get, the quicker it can be done. The same people always do this, let's get everyone!

Big Bob offered a challenge to anyone interested to cover their next model in a NASCAR scheme. Then at any meeting between now and he January meeting, bring your plane, we will get a picture. Or, bring your plane to the January meeting. We will get some sort of prize for the best as voted by club members.

July 2005 Meeting notes:

Since this was a family cookout meeting, the meeting was kept short.

46 members were present

Over 70 were in attendance all together for the cookout, what a great turn out and what great weather.

Rege Hall, Deene Vanmeter and Bob Stephens discussed the future move to the new flying field. Looks like it will be late fall or next spring before we move. Brad asked us to fly a little at the new field and let them know what we need. Waste Management will move everything over to the new field except the heater in the clubhouse and benches and tables.

Everyone is reminded of the City Wide Fun Fly on August 20th hosted by the Eastside Club.

The "Christmas ion July" raffle was held. Jonathon Rifkin won the 1/12th scale Great Planes Corsair and Maurice Unversaul won the gallon of fuel.

Show-N-Tell:

1) Wayne Jones displayed his 1/3 scale J-3 Cub. It is covered with fabric and is powered by a Zenoah G45. Has Wayne and his wife as the pilots.

2) John Louden showed his Little Stick EP. 30" wing span and powered by a 370 brushless motor. It is covered with Nelson Lite film, John was less than impressed with the material.

3) George Louden showed his Burrito fun fly plane, very manueverable. Powered by a MVVS .45.

June Metting notes:

Once again we were blessed with good weather to get in some flights, and many did.

A very large turn out tonight, we had 38 members present.

First order of business tonight was the naming of Bob Stephens as Field Marshall. John Edwards resigned due to other committments.

We voted to have a family cookout at the July meeting. Club will get burgers, dogs and buns. Members are encouraged to bring a side dish or a dessert to share. Also, included in the regular meeting raffle will be the new Great Planes ARF 1/12th scale Corsair.

The club has been asked if we would participate in a Hendricks County project to send every young student to school with school supplies. After some discussion, we decided to have everyone bring a dollar (more if you wish) and we will buy some pencils and paper in bulk to present in the name of our club.

Next, we voted to purchase one of the newly released Hobbico frequency scanners for the club. If it works well, we can get another unit.

Our evening discussion was mostly safety related. Just a few reminders to everyone and several safety stories to drive home the point. Here are a few reminders:

- Do not fly over the pit or spectator area. All flying should be over the runway or north of the runway.

- If there are several pilots in the air at the same time, please have a spotter and be courteous to the other pilots.

- If someone is mowing the runway, hold off flying till the runway is finsihed.

- As you noticed there is a strip of un-mowed grass to designate the runway. After you taxi past this into the pits, you should shut your engine down and walk your plane back to your flight box.

- The picnic tables in the pit area should be aigned north and south. This is so no one will have their back to the runway. A general rule of thumb is when ever you are in the pit area, you should not turn your back to the runway and flying aircraft.

- When adjusting a running eninge, do so from behind, fingers are a valuable appendage. (there is a good tip in the Tips page)

- If you bring younger kids to the field ,please keep an eye on them.

A new American flag was hoisted this evening. We have three retired flags that the American Legion will properly dispose of for us.

We again talked about a soda machine. If one can be found at a very reasonable price, we would consider it. So, for now, we will still work on the honor system.

Show-N-Tell:

1) Cody Hurd showed an EZ Folke Wulf 190 that he and his dad had purchased. Currently has a rear exhaust MDS engine that will be exchanged. Cody also explained some of the items that they intend to correct before they fly it.

2) Ted Gruenhagen showed a .46 sized Sukhoi SU-26 he built for another gentleman as a show model. He will now equip the aircraft with radio and engine and decide how to trim the solid black aircraft.

3) Ron Schafer showed the Sportsman Aviation Waco that he won in a raffle at the Mt. Comfort airshow last year. Aircraft was finished with radio and engine.

Meeting adjourned, remember the cookout July 6th.

Next Meeting: Wednesday June 1, 2005, at 7:00 pm at the field.

May meeting hilights:

The weather turned out great and many club members enjoyed flying before the meeting.

We moved to the Lodge for the meeting as the sun dropped behind the hill, so the temps also dropped.

We had 28 members at the meeting.

Talked about the upcoming swap shop on Saturday the 14th. We will get a kit to sell raffle tickets on if the weather permits a good turn out.

No new news on the new field (how's that for a lot of news?)

Deene is making up a mowing schedule, we will get it out to everybody as well as post it here on the website.

On a serious note, in regards for safety, younger kids should only be on th efligh line side of the rope if they are flying or watching flying. Playing a tossing toys around shoud be kept around the club house. Andin reality, anyone on the flight line should keep an eye out. We have been fortunate to not have any incidents.

1) Rege Hall showed a newly finished Hangar 9 Katana 90. Powered by a Webra 1.20 and dressed up with custo vinyl graphics.

2) Loran Wilber showed his Giant Scale Planes 68" Extra. Very nice looking red, white and blue scheme. He powered it with a Saito 1.80 four stroke. Flew it before the meeting, looks great in the air.

3) Weir Thurman showed an older Scat Kat that was resurrected from a couple different models. It is electric powered, should fly well.

Rege Hall and John Louden gave a demonstration on locating and drilling holes in cowlings.

April Meeting hilights:

A wonderful night for a meeting at the field with 35 members in attendance.

Discussed the field clean-up day and the Adopt-A-Hiway for this coming Saturday. Agreed to meet at the field for a 9 am start. Those who can walk are encouraged to participate in the hiway claean up while the remaining guys can work at the field. Should be a pretty light work load. We will then grill some burgers and dogs.

Latest report on the new field is we are kinda in a holding pattern. We have been asked not to do a whole lot till a gate is in place, which is scheduled for later this summer. Waste Management has been mowing the new field, so, we only have to worry about mowing one field at a time. More later.

Bob Wernsing brought up a discussion on buying a frequency monitor for the club. With the continual crowding of the airwaves, makes good sence. We will look at some different units for price and functionality and report at the next meeting. Everyone seemed in favor.

Reminder that Saturday , May 14th is the swap shop / social flying day. All club members as well as non-club members are welcome. No price to set up and swap, just bring your own table or whatever. If inclimate weather should be present, it is first come first serve for the tables under the awning. We will plan to cook burgers and dogs.

Show-N-Tell:

1) Cody Hurd showed a scratch built C-119 cargo plane that he and his father had obtained at an auction. Had two OS .25's for power. Has yet to be flown.

2) Joe Kosiba showed an older Top Flite Gold Edition P-51 that he has used for learing how to cover. Joe also had a humorous story to go along with it.

3) Matt Brown showed his recently finished Extreme Flite 87" Yak 54. Powered by a DA 50 and Mejlik carbon fiber prop. Very nice. Plans to make maiden flight soon, maybe this Friday.

4) Kerry Muncy and James Flynn showed thier companies, Indy Helicopters, newly finished prototype AH-64 Apached helicopter. It is powered by a YS .80 and is over 7 feet long. They have done all the work themselves, beautiful fiber glass work and machine work. Lots of details, like guns, and more guns and rockets and stuff. Deene and Rege as well as several other guys have also helped out. They hope to sell lots of kits.

February 2005 Meeting Notes:

We discussed a swap shop / flying event and decided to schedule such an event for Saturday the 14th of May. We will have a swap shop, bring your own tables, and a fly in and cook burgers and dogs. Something to kick off the flying season. If weather is inclimate, so be it. The covered area will enable many people to still set up a swap table.

Deene brought up the issue of a field clean up day. We decided to choose a date at the March meeting. We typically do this one Saturday in April. Not sure what will need to be taken care of, John Edwards may get a list together.

John gave a brief talk about batteries and electric motors. This is becoming a popular part of our hobby. One point he noted was there are many websites out there with guys who have a lot more time than us to answer lots of electric aircraft questions. Although seemingly simple, there can arise many different situations for combinations of batteris, ESC's and props.

We then moved on to the 2005 Blacksheep Great Paper Airplane Contest. All participants had five tries with their design/creation to land their plane into a box. After all was said and done, six aircraft made it. Joe Kosiba was first, Tom Carlyle will list all six in the next newsletter. Out of the six, Dick Paasch's plane was drawn for the prize winner. He recieved a $10 gift card form Hobby Town and bragging rights till next time.

Show-N-Tell: 1) Don Schmedake had his scratch built 60" wing span Christen Eagle on hand. Very nice, his daughter picked out the colors, not the usual Eagle colors, but very attractive. Not sure of the engine, but it only weighed 13 pounds.

2) Joe Kosiba showed a newly finished Seagull Models Extra 300. Joe had an amusing story as to the origins of the newly finshed aircraft, please ask him about it. Again, a nice looking plane.

3) Rege Hall showed a 31% Goldberg Ultimate biplane. Powered by a 3W 75 cc engine with a 26x10 Beila carbon fiber prop, has a home made smoke system and 9 servoes and three battery packs. Weighs 23 pounds.

January 2005 Meeting Notes:

The second Annual Great Blacksheep Paper Airplane Contest will be held at the February meeting. Club will supply the paper the night of the meeting. So, bring your ideas, you have to use a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 inch club provided paper for official attempts on target.

We talked about hosting a swap shop/indoor fly in. We will get somedates of surrounding area events to look at next month and decide from there.

We voted to continue the end of the year raffle program in the same form as last year. One chance for every club event that you attend.

Discussed the new field. The club house shell is finsihed. No need to work on it till spring or summer. Waste Management has not made any solid comments as to when we will actually move over to the new field. Most likely late summer or fall time frame. We will have a chance to work the runway directions to our likeing later on. We will need to start thinking about plans on how we want to finish the inside. Need to wait untill spring or summer to start on that project. Waste Management has already moved one large storage shed over and will move our current shed over from our current field when we get ready to move for good. Also, the new field truly does have much more flying space and without a power line on the east end. Nice long low (even inverted) approaches will now be possible!

Tom Carlyle gave a brief safety presentation. The new 2005 AMA Safety rules are in effect, however, we will not get a copy to post at the field till probably March or April.

The board named Nick Shepler and Bob Wernsing as our Safety Coordinators for 2005. This is a new requirement from the AMA.

For Show-N-Tell: Rege Hall showed a new mini-Funtana. It weighs a mere 22 ounces and is powered with a 6.1:1 geared 400 size Hacker brushless motor and a 12x6 electric prop. John Louden showed his recently finished E-Flite Tensor 4D biplane. It is powered by a 370 brushless motor and weighs 10.5 ounces. Both were also powered by lithium polymer batteries. John is planning a short talk on electrics next month.

See you at the field or February meeting.
